As a follow up to my post last weekend I was asked by some contractors in a Harvey Building Products seminar what does the OSHA inspection list look like. For this post I ran a report for recent job site OSHA inspections for contractors in Massachusetts going back to January 1, 2013 to 4/3/2014. There were 1316 site inspections for Mass contractors listed. Contractors visited by OSHA this week are already up on the site!
OSHA site inspections are listed on the OSHA website within a few days of the visit. Following is a query of most recent activity in Massachusetts. You will see the date the file was opened, the NAICS code and the name of the company. Many of the following companies are being investigated for fall protection and safety violations. Click the link and check out the alleged violations listed on the report.
OSHA has recently announced that they will have a National Stand Down on fall protection in construction. OSHA usually lets industry know what they are focusing on by announicng outreach efforts on a particular topic. With spring here we predict that OSHA will be looking for fall protection compliance on construction job sites. Please make sure you are working safe while up on roofs, doing roofing work, painting, siding, framing or installing gutters. OSHA is looking for harnesses, guard rails and safety nets. What you need to do for fall protection compliance
- Written fall protection plan including Subpart M, X and L. Emplyers must provide fall protection whenever workers are exposed to fall hazards 6 feet or more above a lower level.
- Train your workers and have the training certified and documented.
- Provide safety equipment and train your people how to use
- Make sure ALL your subs are compliant, an unsafe sub not using fall protection can lead to fines for both the sub and the general contractor.
- Conduct regular job site tool box talks and record all in attendance
- Create a safety program
