RRP fines in Massachusetts are posted monthly by the Department of Labor Standards on the state website. Contractors, landlords, trades, property management firms, and any entity who offers to work or works on pre-1978 residential properties and child occupied facilities must be certified. Other important criteria is:
- the work is for compensation (landlords; rent is considered compensation)
- the work will disturb 6 or more square feet of painted surfaces per room
- the work will disturb 20 square feet of exterior painted surface
In Massachusetts firms must be a Lead Safe Renovation Contractor and they must make sure the work is done by Lead Safe Renovation Supervisors who received the
8 hour Mass approved RRP training.
RRP Enforcement
Massachusetts is one of the few states actively enforcing the RRP Rule. We have been informed by several companies that they were visited this spring and summer. Some had no issue as they were in compliance. Others were not in compliance and ended up taking our RRP Lead Certification Course. As you can see the the largest fine to date is pending for a company in Watertown at $25,200. The second highest fine on record to date is $12,900.00.
