OSHA Fall Protection Deadline for Contractors looms 6/16/2011

OSHA's new fall protection directive requiring contractors to have a written fall protection plan in place is 6/16/2011.

We have polled many contractors to ask them if they are up to date and we have only found a few are. Most residential contractors are caught off guard by this news and they are weighing their options. Some are scheduling their Fall Protection Training now.

Contractors are saying it comes at a tough time right after the EPA RRP Lead Law, new building code updates and increased scrutiny from other regulatory agencies.

Recently OSHA added the residential construction industry to its targeted industry list. According to OSHA trainer Darcy Cook this means that for the next three to five years our industry will have to deal with random and frequent job site visits from OSHA inspectors.

Are you prepared if OSHA visits your job site?

If you are visited by an OSHA inspector it is recommended that you stay cool and answer their questions in a straight forward manner. Darcy Cook says under no circumstances should you misrepresent that you have things in place if you don't. Inspectors will treat you much better if they know you are being straight with them. It may not prevent a fine but at least they will give you some consideration. Another suggestion is make sure your field personnel and subs know how to respond in the event an OSHA inspector stops by.

Lastly, the inspector will be looking for your OSHA manual and pertinent information for job site hazards which are suppose to be kept on site.  Contractors who have recently been visited by OSHA are calling us to help them develop their EHS manuals.
