Just when we thought things would slow down for the beginning of summer OSHA decided to throw a monkey wrench into the gears. We hear from contractors daily that OSHA inspectors are combing neighborhoods looking for violators to fine. They are asking to see safety manuals, adressing fall protection violations and other hazards. Contractors who have no paperwork usually have a bad day.
Mandatory FALL PROTECTION Plan By 9/15/2011
You may or may not know that OSHA is now requiring that contractors who work at 6 feet or more above lower levels to have written Fall Protection Plans in place by September 15th, 2011. The OSHA directive requires that contractors use guard rails, fall arrest systems or safety nets when working 6 feet above lower levels. OSHA further states that if one of these three methods is infeasible that contractors must have a site specific written plan in place on the project.
Move Over EPA , OSHA
is Back in Town
In 2010 it was all about the EPA RRP Lead Rule. From January to June of 2010 we trained over 3000 contractors seeking to beat the deadline. There were so many contractors seeking training we ran out of seats on some venues in a day.
Now contractors seem to be turning their attention to the sudden scrutiny from OSHA. Contractors who usually wait to until the last minute are booking their fall protection training seeking to beat the September deadline. Some are taking OSHA 30 and 10 courses and every now and then we get calls asking for the EHS Manual before the OSHA enforcement official comes back again.
Many contractors are unaware and are unsuspecting targets for OSHA
Please let your contractor friends and trades know about this recent development. I am amazed at how few people actually know about the new Fall Protection Directive. If you have any questions or just not sure which way to turn or where to start contact us.
