Contractor Training & Education; Online Versus Live with Peers

Posted by Mark Paskell on Sat, Aug 15, 2015 @ 10:45 AM

Last week in our Construction Supervisor License CEU training a Construction Business Owner said they do not like online contractor training. They said they did not have a good learning experience, it took too long and they missed the opportunity to learn with others like them.

Also last week in our Lead Carpenter Business Owner Workshop our students said they relish the opportunity to learn in a setting with other contractors. In our role plays contractors worked together to practice real life situations.  lead carpenter system workshop click here to learn more

I think there may be a place for online training for some subjects however our students continue to tell us there is no substitute for learning in a classroom setting with your peers. Many contractors tell us that they have a hard time paying attention while staring at a power point presentation narrated by a monotone voice. They also tell us that there is no opportunity with online training to ask live questions and get instant answers to the subject being studied.

Looking back over my 30 year career I know that a majority of current construction and business knowledge and expertise has come from learning with other contractors in group settings.

We have trained thousands of contractors over the past 6 years and noticed that once contractors start sharing experiences in a peer group setting they open up and help each other learn. This education setting encourages interaction, increases retention of the subject and builds confidence.

In our upcoming Peer Group Education Program our students will have the opporunity to learn from and with others. We will do role plays, break out groups and more.upcoming course calendar

So when you are thinking about your training ask yourself if it makes sense to stare at a computer listening to some monotone voice or if you would learn better from industry experts with a group of contractors who face the same real life and business challenges as you!

Student Feedback

In our Lead Carpenter Workshop Kevin said; " Mark and Shawn McCadden have a lot of industry related and personal experiences to share and the straight forward interaction with others in the group enhanced my learning experience."

Ben shared; "the best part of the class was the role plays and interaction with other construction business owners."
